Bret Hart Denies Vince McMahon Gave Him A ‘Free Punch’ After The Montreal Screwjob

Following the Montreal Screwjob in 1999, Bret Hart famously knocked out Vince McMahon.

During the Mr. McMahon docuseries that is currently streaming on Netflix, The Hitman flat out denied that McMahon gave him a free punch to the face. He said,

“There was no like, ‘Vince is going to give me a shot’ Like, I don’t [know] where they get that story, because that is such a bunch of bulls**t. It was Vince and me came at each other, and we actually tied up like a wrestling match. Everybody’s ready to pounce on me as soon as we grab each other.”

He continued, “I remember going, the only way I can get a shot in, one shot, maybe, is an uppercut, and I came right up between Vince’s arms, and it was like, you know when you hit the bell [at carnivals] when the thing goes up. He was out cold, like a starfish. It was probably the best thing I ever did. He deserved every bit of that.”

Former WWE NXT Superstar Bobby Steveson (Damon Kemp) faced off against Eddy Thorpe in the first-ever NXT Underground match, and he recently appeared on “The Wrestling Classic” podcast to look back on the bout.

You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:

On the match: “That was great. I think Eddy was getting there too [debuting for ‘NXT’]. I think I was his first big feud. I was really familiar with him… We’re pretty close now. We hang out on the outside.”

On planning the match: “So, planning the match, we heard that we were going to do an Underground match, and I guess I heard before that it didn’t go over that well…so, we had a lot on our plate,” Kemp mentioned. “We were like the guinea pigs of hopefully bringing it back…We wanted a good physical match; everything has to be laid in there. Eddy and I, we planned that match. Everything that was in that match, we put that together. We weren’t told what they wanted…the only thing we knew was the time… eight minutes.”

On bringing the Underground stipulation to NXT: “We thought of it as if they didn’t do another match after this, we sucked. That day, we did a double taping. We were the last match…everything was stacked against us. We literally wrestled at 11 p.m. at night…We killed it…Me and Eddy take great pride in bringing NXT Underground back.”
